Maths and Art

Over the past year during the covid lockdowns, I’ve been learning about the relationship between maths and art. I’ve come from a position of having no art experience at all, so it has been a huge journey of learning for me. I’m still very much a beginner. But if I can have a go, then anyone can!

This page is very much a work in progess.

Mathematical chickens

Four colour theorem chickens.

In 1879 Arthur Cayley asked the question: ‘If a particular map is already successfully coloured with four colours and we add another area, can we still keep the same colouring?’

NRICH has an excellent discussion on this problem.

I’ve taken this idea to create my Four Colour Theorem chickens. I’ve created a template here for you to colour in here. If you want to replicate something like the above, you could use tracing paper to create a layout that you like.

Remember, its only four colours per chicken. I numbered each of my sections lightly in pencil before painting, so that I didn’t end up with any issues.

Islamic Inspired artwork

I’ve created a page here exploring some ideas around the world of Islamic Art here
